Porsche is putting the 911 on a diet

Porsche is now selling the 911 again in a particularly purist version. The coupe will go on sale in February as the Carrera T.

How do you handle that

Did the car perform better with the same horsepower? The obvious solution: lose weight. This is how Porsche does it with the 911. The Carrera T is all about driving fun, but it is not based on an expensive top model: It is a further development of the basic 911 and is therefore at the lower end of the model range with a price of 123,845 euros.

At the rear is the same 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 385 hp and 450 Nm as the 911 Carrera. But the station wagon weighs at least 35 kilograms less.

Porsche’s manufacturers have achieved the weight loss by relatively simple means: instead of the dual-clutch gearbox, there’s a manual gearbox, thinner glass and the omission of the rear seat. Porsche will also reinstall the PDK shifter and leather platform upon request and at no extra cost, which really doesn’t make sense.

According to Porsche, the new chassis tuning, which is lowered by one centimetre, further contributes to the driving dynamics. In addition, the Carrera T gets mechanical differential lock at the rear and optional rear axle steering, otherwise reserved for more powerful models.

On paper, the Carrera T is even slightly inferior to the basic model: due to the manual gearbox, it covers only 291 km/h instead of 293 km/h and the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds, three tenths longer . But Porsche sticks to this: When it comes to driving pleasure, the two cars should be worlds apart.
