WWE held a press conference Saturday to announce the main event of their Crown Jewel event, and things heated up towards the end of the presser as Roman Reigns urged Logan Paul.
Rumors and speculation began the week after WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns performed at Logan Paul’s Impulsive.
The performance was followed by both sides chatting trash on Twitter before WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H invited Paul to a recent episode of Friday Night Smackdown.
Paul appeared on the show to announce Saturday’s press conference. At this point, Triple H announced that November’s main event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia would be Reigns vs. Paul for the Undisputed Universal Title.
“It’s going to be a match like no other, it’s going to be a spectacle like no other,” said Triple H.
Paul and promoter Paul Heyman traded trash talk. Paul would eventually call out Reigns for sitting down and allowing Heyman to speak for him.
Reigns responded by getting up and shoving Paul with both hands before Triple H stepped between the two. After the nudge, Paul was heard saying, ‘And you’re supposed to be the pro.’
Crown Jewel has featured a number of celebrity crossovers in the past, including Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez and Tyson Fury vs Braun Strowman, but Reigns vs Paul will undoubtedly be the biggest yet. It has also featured rare appearances from legends like The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and Bill Goldberg.
Reigns was flanked by his entire stable, which includes his cousins, WWE Undisputed Tag Team Champions Jimmy and Jey Uso, and North American NXT Champion Solo Sikoa, as well as Sami Zayn and Special Counsel Paul Heyman.
YouTuber Paul, Jake Paul’s brother, sat alone in the other stand until he was finally flanked by Triple H.
Aside from the celebrity aspect that Paul and his 30+ million social media followers bring to the event, the YouTube star also brings a certain legitimacy to the ring.
Paul took on boxer great Floyd Mayweather, and to everyone’s absolute surprise, he lasted the entire eight-round exhibition. After that, Paul played two matches in WWE, and in both he did admirably and looked like he belonged in the square circle.
In his previous two matches, he teamed with The Miz in defeating Rey and Dominik Mysterio at WrestleMania 38. He also won a one-on-one match against The Miz at SummerSlam.
“When I was first made aware that Logan Paul was a huge WWE fan, that she [Logan and Jake Paul] were massively interested in the product and they had an interest in doing something with us, I have to admit I chuckled to myself,” Triple H said at one point during the press conference.
“I thought, well, if these guys want to come in here, they’re probably going to be like every other celebrity that comes in here, except for a few.
“The first time you hit the mat, the first time you feel that physicality and how absolutely real that is, you’ll quickly change your mind and decide that maybe the ring isn’t the best place for you.”
Triple H went on to mention how different Paul was and how he was constantly being told, and sent videos of how hard the YouTube star was training for the competition.
