World Cup: Soccer fans rush to Qatar after first-team elimination

Football fans revel in Qatar’s misery as the World Cup hosts became the first team eliminated from the group stage.

A 3-1 defeat by Senegal and the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Ecuador means hosts Qatar are the first team eliminated from the competition, with zero points and just one goal from their first two games.

“Qatar is eliminated first and makes history as the fastest eliminated host nation, it’s funny. I won’t pretend it’s not,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another described it as “poetry in motion” to see Qatar, who have proved a deeply unpopular host with fans, eliminated.

You are only the second host, alongside South Africa, to fall at the first hurdle in World Cup history.

Qatar were unlucky in their opening game and didn’t look much better against Senegal despite finding the back of the net.

Coach Felix Sanchez attacked his players after the defeat by Ecuador but struck a more pragmatic tone on Friday before confirming that hopes of reaching the round of 16 had officially died.

“We know how tough this competition is. We wanted to go far, but as a country we know our limits,” said Sanchez.

“It’s a small country and doesn’t have many people. Local leagues are not very competitive.

“This is my first time at a World Cup. If I could do it all over again, that would be great. Having more experience always helps.”

Qatar has proved an incredibly unpopular host, with fans amid disputes over rainbow flags and attitudes towards LGBTQ+, as well as ongoing concerns over the treatment of migrant workers who built the stadiums for the tournament.

It’s estimated that they spent more than $200 billion on the tournament, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans either.

‘Hahahhahahahahhahahahahhahah Hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha Qatar our first. 200 billion to go out first after two games,” wrote a cheering Twitter user.

“Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.”

Qatar have the remaining game to play against Group A leaders Holland at the Al Bayt Stadium on Tuesday.
