“We are here to play football”: Hazard criticizes German protest

Eden Hazard has slammed Germany’s protest against wearing the OneLove armband, insisting “we’re here to play football”.

Germany national team posed for their team photo while covering their mouths after Fifa’s suspension before enduring a surprise World Cup defeat to Japan.

Seven European nations have backed the gesture but were censored by the world governing body for the tournament in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal.

National coach Hansi Flick said: “That was a sign, a message that we wanted to send out. We wanted to get the message across that Fifa is silencing us.”

But Hazard, who was present in Belgium’s 1-0 win over Canada, slammed Germany and admitted he didn’t want to take part because of the potential yellow card.

“After that they lost the match,” Hazard told RMC Sport when asked about the German gesture. “You would have been better off not doing it and winning.

“We’re here to play football, I’m not here to send a political message, people are better suited for that. We want to focus on football.

“I don’t feel comfortable talking about it because I’m here to play football. We were suspended for a while… I didn’t want to start the game with a yellow card, that would have been annoying for the rest of the tournament.”
