Wayne Hennessey is sent off for WILD kung fu kick against Iran star

Wayne Hennessey was sent off in Wales’s crunch clash with Iran for a horrific kung fu kick at his Iranian opponent.

As Mehdi Taremi ran on goal, the Welsh keeper ran off his line to clear the ball. However, the Nottingham Forest star missed the ball completely and instead made high contact with the striker’s face.

The referee initially showed the 35-year-old a yellow card before the VAR advised him to watch the incident again on the pitchside monitor.

Upon further inspection, he reversed his original decision and sent Hennessey off, leaving Rob Page’s side down to 10 men for the remainder of the game.

The Wales manager took Aaron Ramsey off and replaced him with reserve stopper Danny Ward and will have a selection headache ahead of Group B’s final clash with England.

Hennessey’s red card makes him the first player to be sent off at the 2022 tournament.

And there was heartache late on for Gareth Bale & Co as the Iranians scored two late goals to almost knock the Welshman out of contention.

Wales opened the tournament with a timid display against the United States on Monday, with captain Bale scoring a late penalty to salvage a point.

But Iran’s two dramatic goals leave Wales on the brink of elimination and Page’s side need an unlikely win over England and other results to qualify for the knockout rounds.
