Virgil van Dijk’s defense of Rangers’ opening goal in Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Liverpool drew criticism from supporters.
Rangers took the lead in the 17th minute when Fabio Carvalho was disowned and Ryan played Jack into Scott Arfield, who fired into the bottom corner.
Van Dijk was slow to react to the threat and didn’t challenge Jack, drawing criticism from some fans online.
“Virgil van Dijk is done,” claimed one fan on Twitter.
‘Van Dijk retreats there instead of attacking the ball. Smh,” added another supporter.
“It’s impossible for us to keep a goal these days. Mistakes between Konate and Van Dijk there. Teams don’t even have to work hard to find gaps, we just fill them out,” wrote one fan.
The Dutch defender has been widely recognized as one of the best centre-backs in the world in recent years after playing a key role in Liverpool winning the Champions League and Premier League.
With Liverpool struggling in the opening weeks of the season and van Dijk failing to match the highs of previous years, one supporter believes he should no longer be seen as the best player at his position.
“When will people stop calling van Dijk the best defender in the world lmao?” You posted on Twitter.
Ever since van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75million in January 2018, he has been ever-present in the side’s backline when fit.
However, one supporter has called for him to be dropped following his slump in form in recent weeks.
“Have you noticed how Van Dijk plays? Matip and Konate should at least start attacking people,” they wrote.
