Verstappen reveals the advice he gave De Vries to bag the AlphaTauri seat

Max Verstappen has revealed he has urged Nyck de Vries to contact Red Bull boss Helmut Marko before being given the AlphaTauri seat.

Red Bull’s sister team, AlphaTauri, lost Pierre Gasly after signing for Alpine but Marko switched to De Vries, who shone in one race for Williams that season. Two-time world champion Verstappen has now lifted the lid on how he helped bring the deal to fruition.

“Of course I knew that was coming,” said Verstappen. “But of course it’s unbelievable for him. He’s been pushing for this for a long time and to finally get this opportunity is great for him. But I also think that after Monza there was no real discussion.

“Helmut [Marko] is the guy, if he likes something, he’s brave enough to put it in the car, while other teams might be a bit more cautious. That are great news. We are good friends too. We had dinner the day after Monza and I told him: “Just give him (Marko) a call, you never know what might happen.”

“It was also the right time to call him as on Sunday Helmut is probably still excited from racing on Monday, so it worked out really well. And I’m very happy for him.”

And de Vries himself says he is concentrating on a successful career in Formula 1.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity and I’m super excited to be on the starting grid for next year and it’s a competitive sport,” he said. “As long as I’m doing my job on track I can continue to successfully advance my career and I think that’s all I’m worried about [about] and focused.”
