If any member of the USMNT group needs extra inspiration ahead of Friday’s game against England, they should speak to Antonee Robinson.
The Fulham defender stoked the flames on the eve of his USA team’s World Cup match against England, telling them not only can they cause a shock against Gareth Southgate’s team, but they can go ahead and win the entire tournament in Qatar.
‘Yes. Everyone in our squad thinks we can beat any team that day. So why not think that we can get out of that group and then win every knockout game?’ Robinson told the Times.
But first the USA need a result against England, unsurprisingly the defender, who plays for Fulham in the English Premier League, is confident.
Robinson’s inspiration, he says, comes from England’s poor form in the European Nations League this year, where they failed to win in six games.
In addition, England failed to beat Italy in two games and twice lost to Hungary – in one game they were beaten 4-0. Both Hungary and Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Robinson said: “We’re definitely an underdog. Our group is pretty tough, but we have to believe that we can go through and we have to want it more than everyone else.
“I remember doing a headline in one of the English newspapers the day after: ‘England Have Easiest Group’ and all that’s going to heat us and Wales up. Do you think you just come and win? It never works like that.
“You saw what happened in the Nations League, England lost to teams they thought were going to come up and hit.”
Robinson earned his 30th cap for the USA in the 1-1 draw with Wales in Group B on Monday.
England, on the other hand, appeared to have returned to their best form with an impressive 6-2 win over Iran.
