Social media are reacting to Roger Federer’s last game when the Swiss played alongside Rafael Nadal

It’s the end of an era in tennis as Swiss legend Roger Federer retires on Friday night.

After being paired with longtime rival and friend Rafael Nadal in a doubles match at the Laver Cup, the two greats lost to Americans Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-7, 9-11.

The score didn’t matter. If he won, Federer would not have seen another day of play. That night would always mean the end of his career. In contrast to the end of Serena Williams’ career, the pressure of the moment was missing – and whether Federer would continue playing.

After hugging Nadal, then Tiafoe and Sock, Federer started crying to bid an emotional goodbye to the game of tennis.

His departure was treated similarly to William’s first night at the US Open. A video showing his career highlights was shown with messages from other greats of the game. Then he started talking and started crying.

His speech touched the hearts of fans watching at home and tennis players watching one of the greats play their last game.

Federer recalled that he had already considered retiring in June 2021, with all the efforts that had led to that night.

At the end he took the stage and was greeted with applause from a roaring crowd at the O2 Arena in London.

In the end, Team Europe and Team World are even 2:2 in the Laver Cup.
