Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal pay tribute to the US Open fan known for taking his shirt off

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal noticed a US Open fan famous for removing his jersey at Flushing Meadows just before sending the Laver Cup crowd into a frenzy during the Swiss’ final game.

Federer teamed up with his biggest rival in the final match of his professional tennis career, which spanned 24 years.

Nadal and the 20-time Grand Slam champion failed to beat world duo Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe, losing 4-6 7-6 11-9.

In an easier moment, the Swiss ace sat next to Nadal during a break in the first set, with Team Europe leading 4-3 in the first set.

“Hey, do you know this guy? This guy is from the US Open,” Federer told Nadal, smiling.

Nadal actually recognized him and referred to him as the man who always “takes the shirts”. [off].’

First in a gold buttoned shirt, the fan took off his first number and twirled it over his head before tossing it into the crowd.

From then on he continued. Underneath the gold jersey was a black t-shirt with Rodger Federer’s ‘RF’ written on it first, followed by a navy blue Nadal t-shirt.

From then on it was almost all Federer, another 10 jerseys were stripped off leaving a white RF jersey.

According to the host commenter, the gentleman was flown in from the US especially for the occasion.

Federer and Nadal both appeared to be enjoying the spectacle alongside an impassioned crowd cheering, clapping and dancing the whole time.

The tennis greats returned to the court with smiles on their faces.

While Federer certainly appreciated what he saw, he suggested the fan take it up a notch.

“He ends up going naked. He has to,” he said.

Federer may have lost his last match and the man didn’t go the distance. Even the big ones don’t always seem to get what they want.
