Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards sees no reason why New York could not welcome the Champions League final as he and fellow CBS pundit Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry took part in a USA-themed Q&A session.
The three former football stars are known for their entertaining speaking engagements at Europe’s elite competitions and regularly take part in an ‘In the Mixer’ session.
With CBS Sports’ Golazo show heading to the Big Apple later this month for Day Five, host Kate Abdo conducted an American version of the question-and-answer segment.
When asked if New York City should host the Champions League final, Richards was wholeheartedly in favor of the idea, while Carragher disagreed, comparing it to his beloved Liverpool, who have the Super Bowl.
After joking, the finals should be played in two weeks when the panel is in the States, Richards, when asked again, added: “100 percent. Why not?’
Carragher replied: ‘Because there are no American teams!’ While Abdo added: “Because it’s a European competition.”
Richards added: “It doesn’t matter. So?’
The former Liverpool defender then asked: “What about the Super Bowl in Liverpool?”
Ex-striker Henry dismissed this idea by saying it would not happen.
The pundits then couldn’t agree on who is the greatest American soccer player of all time, as Carragher picked a different star than Henry and Richards.
Richards said, “Ooh… Clint Dempsey! My boy Clint, I’m going with my boy Clint.
Carragher soon replied, “No! I’m going with Landon Donovan.’
The former Premier League defender was called out by Abdo for failing to pick his CBS counterpart.
She said: “Clint is on our team, disrespect to anyone who is on our team.”
Henry admitted it was a “tough” choice but sided with Richards, saying “I’d go with Clint.”
The judges were also asked about their favorite pizza toppings, the height of the Empire State Building and how many hot dogs they could eat in 10 minutes, but one question seemed to baffle them all: “What is a bodega?”
Carragher said, “Sounds like an ice cream cone,” while Richards replied, “A bodega?! Never heard of it in my life!’
All hope was pinned on former New York Red Bulls star Henry as Abdo said: ‘Thierry? Come on, you’re a New Yorker.’
He replied: “It depends. I’m sorry I don’t know I’m French, remember?’
The trio couldn’t guess the correct answer, but now everyone is excited for their trip to the US on October 25th and 26th.
Dempsey, Maurice Edu and former USMNT international Charlie Davies will also appear on the show called Destination Brooklyn.
