Max Holmes’ Grand Final dream is STILL alive as Geelong Young Gun is on the track on Saturday

Max Holmes could still be in the AFL Grand Final on Saturday after scans showed he avoided a serious hamstring injury.

Geelong’s youngster appeared to miss the clash against Sydney at next week’s MCG after suffering what appeared to be a major setback in Friday night’s preliminary final as the Cats beat Brisbane by 71 points.

The 20-year-old, who had one goal and 12 disposals against the Lions, was substituted from the game and looked devastated as he lay face down on the touchline.

However, scans showed the injury was not as serious as feared and the wingman confirmed Cats coach Chris Scott’s claim that the club’s medical staff were “optimistic” Holmes would be available for the Grand Final.

The 20-year-old wingman had scans and showed positive signs as he completed a light training session on Sunday. Holmes will increase his workload and face a fitness test at Geelong’s main training session of the week on Wednesday.

“I’ve never done a hammy before, so I figured I obviously pinged it based on my reaction,” he told reporters on Sunday.

“But everything is looking good at the moment so we’ll just see how it goes over the week and I should be fine.”

If selected, the youngster will become the Cats’ youngest player in the game against the Swans as Geelong are looking for a first Premiership in 11 years.

Holmes was a revelation in his sophomore season, scoring 14 goals in 18 games and averaging 15.6 goals per game.

“Max is doing well,” Cats football boss Simon Lloyd told reporters on Sunday.

“He’s an incredibly positive person and we’ll find out how he works throughout the week, probably our main training.”

Sydney also has injury concerns, with Sam Reid having significant doubts for Saturday as the Swans make their first Grand Final appearance since 2016

The versatile taller suffered an adductor injury and was substituted off in Sydney’s dramatic one-point win over Collingwood at the SCG on Saturday.
