Marcus Rashford made an instant impression with his fifth goal in the 5-1 win over Iran

Marcus Rashford immediately caused a stir on his return to England when he scored his side’s fifth goal against Iran just 49 seconds after stepping onto the pitch.

The striker, who has appeared in an England shirt for the first time since his missed penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout, was named as a substitute in England’s tournament opener against Iran and came on after 71 minutes from Gareth Southgate.

25 seconds after play resumed after substitution, Rashford was played through by captain Harry Kane, cut into his defender and pushed past goalkeeper Hossein Hosseini to mark his return to the national team in style.

Corresponding Selectthe goal, from which Rashford scored just three touches, was the third-fastest goal by a substitute in World Cup history.

England controlled the game throughout and led 4-1 when manager Gareth Southgate Rashford came on for Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden for Mason Mount, Jack Grealish for Raheem Sterling and Eric Dier for Harry Maguire.

Kane also impressed, dropping low again to record his second assist of the game after serving to Sterling earlier in the game.

Kane was then also substituted for the returning Callum Wilson as Southgate attempted to rest key players with the game won.

Rashford has scored 13 goals in 47 games for England but was dropped from the squad back in March after a poor form run for club Manchester United.

He then also missed the summer internationals and missed the last international break after picking up an injury.

However, he was recalled for the tournament after rediscovering his form under new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag and now plans to continue while England try to progress through the tournament.
