Luis Suarez leaves Nacional just a few months before the World Cup

Luis Suarez is back as a free agent just a few months after leaving Atletico Madrid after it was revealed he was leaving childhood Nacional for the second time in his career.

The 35-year-old Uruguayan left Atlético Madrid in the summer and although it was reported he would prefer to remain in Europe, he has returned home to his first professional club.

Suarez has performed well for the Montevideo club, scoring four goals in eight league games. However, it was announced that his second spell with the club will end before the World Cup.

Details of his deal have been kept somewhat under wraps by both player and club, with very few people seemingly knowing exactly how long he would be staying.

Club boss Jose Fuentes has now made that clear to ESPN.

He told the network: “When the Uruguayan championship ends, Suarez will leave, that’s how we arranged his deal.”

“We agreed on that and he tried really hard to get here.

“I say that to avoid fan expectations. Suarez leaves. We asked him and he answered the same as before.’

Fuentes’ comments seem to confirm that while the club wanted to keep him a little longer, the player always had a desire to return to Europe.

It’s unclear if Suarez will look for a new club ahead of the World Cup. Uruguay’s tournament kicks off on November 24 when they meet South Korea. A few days later they meet Portugal, whom they eliminated in the round of 16 in Russia four years ago, before their group stage against Ghana ends.

This World Cup probably reflects something of the changing of the guard for a Uruguayan side that have largely belonged together since the 2010 tournament where they reached the semifinals.

Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin will almost certainly feature in their final edition of the tournament.

All three will play in their fourth World Cup tournament this winter if called up to Diego Alonso’s squad.

Uruguay are aiming to win the tournament for the first time since their shock victory over Brazil in the 1950 edition at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.
