Jamie Redknapp has backed Antonio Conte’s decision to drop Son Heung-min from the start against Leicester City – despite the Tottenham striker scoring a 14-minute hat-trick.
Son was introduced after an hour when the game was 3-2. His three goals in 14 minutes, his first of the season, took the game away from Leicester.
Speaking of Sky Sports After the game, Redknapp backed Conte, saying it was Son’s prerogative to buy into the Italian’s methods as he has a wealth of attacking talent.
“Of course he would get angry, you could see that [when he was on] the bank,” he said.
“He’s a very, very special player and that’s how you have to react when you’re left out. But Spurs have so many great opportunities and you have to accept that.”
“It’s not about a single player. It was always son and [Harry] Kane the last three, four, five years.
“Now there are other options. You got Richarlison, Kane, son, [Dejan] Kulusevski, brilliant options to get off the bench. And that’s exactly what you have to get involved with.
“This is the perfect example of what you should do as a player but also as a manager. You have to say to Conte that he got it right. He’s not afraid to skip players, he won the golden boot last year.
“They spoke about Leicester before the game, how their confidence is so fragile. And sometimes it’s the same with players. Son said before the game he needed to get back to basics and get his finishing right. And that shows today. It was a brilliant hat trick and an amazing cameo.”
Meanwhile, Redknapp had previously begged the need for Conte to keep his wealth of talent on the side as Tottenham harbored ambitions to challenge on multiple fronts this season, before saying there was “so much” at the moment what to look forward to at the north london club .
“You need everyone committed to what you want to achieve. I’m not sure if maybe Son would agree with the plan to do that every week because they all want to start,” he said.
“But you have to make big decisions and that’s why he’s one of the best managers in the world. He will only hope that all his players come back from international action.
“They have a big game against Arsenal but Spurs are looking very good with the options they have going forward is just a joke. So much to look forward to with Tottenham at the moment.
