Jack Grealish vows to find the form that made him a £100m player by returning to his preferred role

Jack Grealish says he will find the form that earned him a move to Manchester City and prove why the club paid a record £100m fee to bring him to the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola had to defend his midfielder in his week after a second disappointing Champions League appearance against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

Speaking to Man City’s official website, Grealish admits he needs to start performing for his club and use the minutes he gets in City’s line-up.

“The attackers are the ones that the manager often rotates,” he said.

“Not everyone will play every game as we have so much talent.

“If you get the chance you have to grab it with both hands and I will try and do that.

“Last year I settled in – but I want to start performing in the way that made me move here. I did that at times last season, just maybe not consistently enough.”

The 27-year-old’s first season at City may have ended in a Premier League-winning medal, but it lacked the sparkling form we’ve seen from Grealish at Aston Villa. Still, the Englishman started this season with renewed vigor on City’s pre-season tour.

Jack explained how his season has suffered since then: “I started pre-season pretty well and started the first game of the season which we won at West Ham.

“Then I got hurt on the second. I came back and played a few Champions League games.

“I felt like I could have been better at both, but I’m still trying to catch up on my fitness. Now I’m just trying to get fit and get back in shape.”

The key to finding this form could be Grealish’s role in City Attack. He has played in several positions for Pep Guardiola but believes he is at his best when used on the left, as he was at Villa Park.

“What got me here was playing on the left wing.” he said.

“Last season there were times when I played as a false nine, I sometimes played as a number eight where Bernardo, Gundo[gan] and Kevin [De Bruyne] play.

“I like that position too and have played there for Villa in the past. I think when you play that position at City you see a lot of the ball, so I’d say left wing or an eight [is his preferred position].

“The offensive players like me, Erling [Haaland]Phil [Foden]Julian [Alvarez] and Riyadh [Mahrez]”I think we can all play in different positions.”

Grealish has scored just six goals for City and provided just four assists for the Premier League champions since joining Manchester last summer.

However, his boss doesn’t care about the numbers and is delighted with the contribution from City’s No. 10.

Guardiola has supported his star by saying: “I want him to score goals and I want him to make assists, so does he. but that is not the point.

“It’s about his contribution off the ball and what he can do for the others and the many, many things he can do.

“He also competes with top, top players and he knows it perfectly.

‘But he never complains about that. He’s such a nice guy and in the games he hasn’t played in he’s the first to help the team.
