Football fans have poked fun at Nottingham Forest after the Premier League newcomers lost 3-2 to Fulham on Friday night.
Steve Cooper’s side led 1-0 through Taiwo Awoniyi that night before scoring three goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Joao Palhinha and Harrison Reed after a stunning six-minute volley from Fulham.
Lewis O’Brien clawed back a goal but Fulham held on, leaving Forest in 19th place with just four points from seven games.
They’ve now also conceded 17 goals and thrown away leads to lose 3-2 to both Fulham and Bournemouth – the two teams they emerged from the Championship with last year.
Forest made headlines this summer after signing 22 players and spending more than £150m on the transfer market.
It hasn’t gone according to plan, however, with many questioning the impact of signing so many new players and spending so much money.
Last night’s disappointing defeat which saw Jesse Lingard’s marquee contract drop by £120,000-a-week only adds to the pressure on the club.
And fans were quick to criticize the club and its summer deal after the defeat.
One said: “Nottingham Forest will be the only club in history to finish with fewer points than they signed in the summer.”
Another added: “Steve Cooper really said, ‘lets throw 20 random players together and take on the Premier League.
Another fan quipped: “Second collapse in a row for Steve Cooper’s Forest, both against the other promoted players. After spending £140m my heart is bleeding.”
This was confirmed elsewhere, with one saying: “Nottingham Forest have signed 21 players only to be relegated.”
Fans also criticized Cooper and his inability to collect points against Forest’s alleged relegation rivals.
One fan said: “If Nottingham Forest can’t beat their contemporaries, then who will?”
Another user explained: “They leave experienced Premier League players like Dennis and Kouyate on the bench. Steve Cooper could be fired soon.’
Dean Henderson has also faced criticism after moving to the City Ground for a season this summer.
One critical fan said: “Henderson went into the Nottingham woods to show United what they’re missing. 7 games a season he swallowed 17 goals.”
Meanwhile, Lingard’s move to Forest has been a big talking point of the window this summer after he reportedly snubbed several teams into joining Cooper’s side.
One of those teams was West Ham and their fans threw fake £50 notes at them when they played Forest at the City Ground earlier this year.
After he was benched last night, supporters were quick to scoff at Forest putting such an effort on his wages.
One said: “Jesse Lingard is getting £200,000 a week while on the bench for 19th-place Nottingham Forest, who are currently 3-1 at home against Fulham.”
Another added: “Jesse Lingard sat on the bench again and was on the field for less than 30 minutes. He blindly robbed Nottingham Forest. No pre-season because he spent the summer doing tick-tocks all over America. I’ve never been happier missing a player.”
