FIFA 23 will feature Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond

Popular fictional soccer coach Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond will star in FIFA 23, allowing fans to take control of the team from the Emmy-winning series.

Based in Greater London, UK, the fictional team is the subject of the hit, Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series, in which Lasso, a college football coach from the United States, is hired as a Premier League manager.

Now the American coach meets the real elite of the Premier League – at least in game form.

FIFA announced the arrival of Lasso & Co. on Wednesday, revealing that leading actor Jason Sudeikis’ beloved Lasso will be available as the selectable manager of AFC Richmond in career mode, as fans can play as their favorite mustache-wearing manager who is the Show for AFC Richmond or other directs team of your choice.

Players can also create their own manager or choose a real licensed manager to take control of AFC Richmond or create a player and join the AFC Richmond roster in a league of their choice.

Fans can also play as part of the Rest of the World league in kick-offs, online friendlies and online seasons with fan favorites Roy Kent, Jamie Tartt, Sam Obisanya and Dani Rojas as part of the Greyhounds’ roster.

Richmond’s iconic home ground, Nelson Road, which was modeled on and filmed at Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park stadium, will also feature in the game.

“I’m really fortunate and deeply grateful that I’ve had many special moments in my career so far and I consider this experience to be one of the best of them,” said Emmy Award-winner Jason Sudeikis, who plays the beloved soccer coach.

“As long-time fans of EA SPORTS FIFA, it’s truly a dream come true for me and the rest of the boys to have Ted Lasso and the entire AFC Richmond squad included in the latest version of the game.

“Our cast and crew work incredibly hard on this show and we’re flattered that it resonates with so many people. We look forward to our fans having the opportunity to play as, play as, and even play against their favorite AFC Richmond characters.”

Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, said he’s looking forward to playing his character and beating his show rival Jamie Tartt.

“It’s so damn cool to be at FIFA. I’m not sure if this will help dispel the CGI rumors, but fuck it, it’s totally worth it,” said Emmy-winner Brett Goldstein, who plays AFC Richmond player Roy Kent.

“I look forward to beating my nephew in a game with me as Roy Kent and him as Jamie Tartt. He will be angry.”

The show’s Twitter account hinted at the cameo on Tuesday when it shared a photo of Sudeikis playing the manager, which was digitally scanned.

The lead actor posed for the FIFA team’s face capture device, which recreates a person’s likeness for the game. Players are usually scanned for every game in the rig, and managers will reportedly do the same this time around.

Along with the photo, the account wrote: “Look out Mario! You’re not the only pixelated man with a mustache who never knows where the tube will take him…”

Even more telling is the fact that EA Sport FIFA responded to the tweet with a simple side-eyed emoji.

It’s unclear how Lasso and Co will appear in-game and if they’ll be available for online play.

It’s also not the first time the popular character has appeared in a soccer video game.

Last year, the TV show featured in Football Manager 2022 as a small Easter egg, as Lasso’s famous “Believe” could be seen in the dressing room, changing color depending on the player’s chosen team.

Ted Lasso debuted in August 2020 and has won 11 Emmys in two seasons.

The series follows Lasso’s unprecedented move from college football to manager of the faltering football team.

For the first two seasons, Richmond are relegated from the English top flight, only to be promoted straight back to the Premier League.

Ted Lasso is expected to return to Apple TV+ for a third season, but a release date is unknown.
