Cristian Romero insists Virgil van Dijk and Lisandro Martinez are the Premier League’s best defenders

Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero has named what he thinks are the two best defenders in the Premier League.

Romero, widely regarded as one of the best players in the league at the position, avoided naming himself in the top two and played it safe with his answers.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old said: “Today, the best defenders for me are Virgil van Dijk – always – and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez. For me they are the best in the Premier League.”

It’s no surprise that Romero van Dijk has been named the Premier League’s best centre-back.

The Netherlands international has made a huge impact since arriving at Anfield, helping his side win many trophies.

The 31-year-old played a key role in Liverpool winning the Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and their first league title in 30 years during his time at Merseyside.

The imposing defender was also the winner of the PFA Players’ Player of the Year after an impressive 2018/19 season in the Premier League.

Playing alongside Martinez on international duty, it should come as no surprise that Romero chose his compatriot among his top two players.

The Manchester United defender had a difficult start to life in the Premier League after losing to Brighton and Brentford in his first two games, conceding six goals in the games.

However, since the reinstatement of Raphael Varane at Man United, Martinez has grown into his role at the heart of his side’s defence.

United’s summer signing still has some way to assuage the doubters – who mainly have concerns about his size – but recent performances would have helped endear him to Old Trafford faithful.

Away from the Premier League, Romero also declared his love for Barcelona’s brilliant sides of 2008-2012 under Pep Guardiola, but not for reasons one might expect.

A full member of the defenders’ union, Romero refrained from mentioning Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto’o, instead saying: “I’ve always liked watching this team because I’ve always liked watching Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique and also Javier Mascherano – he played there, ‘

In a somewhat surprising take, especially when it comes to the famously sombre Mascherano, Romero believes these defenders “were beautiful to behold”.
