Ben Simmons admits he’s built up a ‘tough skin’ because the criticism ‘don’t fucking stop’.

Ben Simmons has responded to recent criticism he has faced after video showing him throwing a jump shot in airball during Brooklyn Nets practice in the park.

“It finds me all the time,” Simmons told ESPN ahead of Wednesday’s preseason game against the Milwaukee Bucks. “And it doesn’t fucking stop. Sometimes I even get sick of it, but then I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m Ben Simmons, you know?

Simmons is no stranger to criticism, and has received more than enough of it between his days in Philadelphia and Brooklyn.

“Recently there was a clip of me doing an airball shot in the park. In the meantime, about 10 guys fired multiple shots. So it’s like people find a clip and try to make everything out of it – like Ben can’t [this or that].’

Most of the criticism surrounding Simmons relates to the inability and unwillingness to shoot from off color.

“C’mon man, you think I’m just taking every shot? It is not true. But that’s part of it and you have to have tough skin and I realize that, but no, I can’t take everything personally. It’s social media,” he continued.

Simmons was traded to Brooklyn last February after requesting a trade away from the 76s after citing concerns about his mental health as the reason for his desire to leave Philadelphia.

After the trade, he didn’t arrive for the Nets due to a back injury.

The fact that he hasn’t played an NBA game in almost a year and a half only seems to make his critics even louder.

The 26-year-old Australian went on to explain that he leaned on fellow All-Star teammates Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

“Me and Ky literally just talked about it before practice,” Simmons said. ‘He’s like, ‘Why is everyone on our heads?’ But it comes with it. Shit, we’re interesting people I guess. You wouldn’t talk about some guys because you just don’t care.’

When he explains why he thinks he can handle so much criticism from fans, they say, “Because people know what I can do, what I’m capable of. I believe it is. If I were someone who couldn’t do certain things, I don’t think people would piss me off that much. And I don’t mind because it kind of motivates me.

“Obviously it’s a lot of work for everyone to deal with at times, but I see it in a way as a bit of a respect thing.”

Simmons was in action for the Nets on Wednesday night and impressed with his 107-97 win over the Bucks before the start of the season.
