Glenn Maxwell continued his shocking form against England on Wednesday night as pressure mounts on the selectors to drop him from the Australia team.
Just days before the T20 World Cup, England have handed Australia a second straight eight-round defeat in Canberra.
Maxwell made just eight runs from 11 balls and scored a shot on Sam Curran towards a deep square leg during Australia’s run hunt.
It continues a sad string of low scores from the 33-year-old Victorian, who has netted just 16 runs in his last six T20 international games.
Widely regarded as one of the most explosive batters in the world, Maxwell has the lowest T20 batting rate of any top Aussies internationally for the past year.
Incredibly, his eight runs last night in the nation’s capital are his best performance from his last six games – which would set alarm bells ringing for the selectors.
Australian cricket legend and commentator Mark Waugh admitted the all-rounder may not be a guarantee in the squad.
“It’s a real concern for Maxwell’s form leading up to this World Cup,” he said in a commentary for Fox Sports.
“Maybe he’s not a fixture on the team. (They) would have thought he would be, given the way he fields and his bowling.
“But he’s primarily there to beat 4th. (It will be) interesting to see what happens there in the future.
Internet cricket fans were not so polite and many believed it should be scrapped now.
“Glenn Maxwell is a finished gamer and a big scammer,” said one Twitter user
“Should replace Glenn Maxwell if they want to keep the toilet,” commented another.
“Glenn Maxwell is the most overrated and overrated player in T20 cricket.” said a third.
‘The Big Show’ has a few more chances to find form before the World Cup begins, with warm-up games against India and England ahead.
Australian skipper Aaron Finch had mixed opinions about last night’s match.
“We were really bad on the field, pretty sloppy. David was fantastic, his raw power was fantastic,” he said after the game.
“Depends on the opposition but (this XI) is close. Discuss a place or two. A nice luxury to have three world-class quicks. Try different things with bowling distribution.’
The Aussies will start their 2022 World Cup season in a game against New Zealand on October 22 at the SCG.
