Atletico Madrid FINALLY start Antoine Griezmann after agreeing £22m transfer

Antoine Griezmann made his first start of the season for Atletico Madrid in Sunday night’s game against rivals Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The French striker has been limited to substitute appearances so far this season as Atletico tried to pay Barcelona a £35m fee, which they will have to pay if he exceeds £50 a season while on loan at the club.

However, after reports in L’Equipe suggested that an agreement had been reached between the two clubs on a reduced-price transfer, Griezmann will make his first start for the club in the big Madrid derby.

The 31-year-old’s seven appearances this season in LaLiga have all come after the 60th minute and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has made it clear that the restrictions stem from the club’s hierarchy.

Griezmann has still managed to score three goals in those games but will be relieved that he can finally play a full ninety minutes to secure his place in France’s squad ahead of November’s World Cup.

Barcelona had dug their heels in to try to win back the full £35m for the striker but are now happy to accept the reduced fee as the cash-strapped club look to win back some cash for their unwanted stars.

Tensions between the two clubs were strained over the transfer and were only communicated through the player’s lawyer Sevan Karian, who acted as an intermediary in the deal.

It was thought Griezmann would have to wait until after the international break to get his first start of the season but the deal seems to have included Sunday’s meeting with Real Madrid.

Atletico entered the game to be the first team to take points from Carlo Ancelotti’s men this season. Real have won five out of five so far this season and a win would see them overtake Barcelona at the top of the table.
