Arsene Wenger wanted to meet Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves after 8-2 loss to Man United

Arsene Wenger was about to slam Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves over his “brutal” questions after an 8-2 loss to Manchester United in 2011.

The pressure on Wenger was immense after the humiliating defeat at Old Trafford and Shreeves, in his role as Touchline reporter for Sky Sports, covered the post-match interview in the tunnel.

He narrates the episode in his new book, Bye Geoff! Stories from the Touchlineserialized by The Sun, Shreeves has revealed how his hard-hitting questions got under Wenger’s skin.

“There was no room for soft-soap questions — Wenger had to face an inquisition,” Shreeves said.

“I asked if he would resign and if he thought the board would support him. brutal questions.

“I could see the anger building in his eyes and afterwards Arsenal’s media chief Mark Gonnella said: ‘The boss just told me he was about to hit you during the interview, he was so angry.’

“Years later, Arsene said to me, ‘Geoff, I was going to hit you that day, that’s right. But you weren’t the only one – there were many others.”

Shreeves has compiled a report featuring the biggest names in the game who have made careers as Sky Sports’ chief touchline reporter.

He joined the network in 1991 and has been the recognizable voice and face of post-game coverage and interviews ever since.

Shreeves describes the “visceral” dislike and animosity between Wenger and Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson not only on that day but as they dueled for football’s greatest honours.

Arsenal were exhausted en route to Old Trafford, but nonetheless it was a defeat that was seen as the lowest point of Wenger’s Arsenal career.

For Manchester United, Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick, Ashley Young struck two from distance, while Danny Welbeck, Nani and Ji-Sung Park also added to the scoresheet.

As well as describing how an angry Wenger ‘wanted to hit’ him at United, there are also stories about another side of the Frenchman, one where he popped in for a glass of wine after a game in Wigan and unpacked the day’s events.
