West End dims lights in honor of ‘immensely talented’ Dame Angela Lansbury

Theaters in London’s West End will dim their lights in memory of the “immensely talented” Dame Angela Lansbury following her death aged 96.

Best known for her portrayal of Jessica Fletcher in the American drama series Murder, She Wrote, the Irish-British and American actress has been a leading figure on Broadway and the West End throughout her career.

Five days before her 97th birthday, Dame Angela died “peacefully” in her sleep, according to the family.

In tribute to her, West End theaters will dim their lights for two minutes before performances at 7pm on Wednesday, the Society of London Theater (SOLT) and the UK Theater have announced.

SOLT and UK Theater Co-Managing Directors Claire Walker and Hannah Essex said: “The theater world is a smaller place tonight after the passing of Dame Angela Lansbury, whose work has touched so many generations.

“She lit up every stage she has performed on and her extraordinary talent will be greatly missed.”

Dame Joan Collins was among famous names to pay tribute to Dame Angela, calling her “immensely talented”.

The veteran actress shared a video clip of them performing alongside Dana Wynter at the 1959 Academy Awards on Instagram, writing, “Farewell to the wonderful Angela Lansbury.

“She was immensely talented and deserved her long life and career.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones, who starred opposite Dame Angela in the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, said their time together will “forever be one of the joys of my life.”

In a post on Instagram, Zeta-Jones wrote: “Darling darling, Dame Angela Lansbury. may you rest in peace

“Our Broadway double act will forever be one of the joys of my life. When the lights dim for you on The Great White Way, you will shine in our hearts forever. I love you Angela Catherine.”

Katherine McNamara, who also starred in the musical, said Dame Angela encouraged her to improve on stage with her, which she described as “the greatest gift and freedom anyone of her caliber has given me.”

In a post on Twitter, she added: “Angela was a true leading lady in every way and did so with a presence and grace that extended to everyone around her.

“Thank you for the laughs, the lessons, the love – and for giving me some of the most insightful words of wisdom I carry with me every day.

“You are and will always be a darling. Thank you for changing the life of this little Fredrika. Always love you, Grandmother Armfeldt”.

Sharing a photo of her with Dame Angelam, Jennifer Hudson said: “There will never be another like Dame Angela Lansbury. A true pioneer of stage and screen. Rest in peace!”

Julian Morris starred alongside Dame Angela in Little Women in 2017 and described her as “really inspiring”.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain, he said: “She was so forthcoming with advice. She was just an inspiration for being in her 90’s and knowing her craft so well.

“Know your text, work, have the power, have the care.”

Referring to a picture of them together, he added: “She saw me and I was on my lunch break and she said to come and see me in her trailer.

“We both skipped the main courses and went straight to dessert. And she told me all about her life when she moved to America. It was 1940, which is hard to believe.
