Washington imposes new sanctions on the Taliban

Girls in Afghanistan drop out of school after sixth grade. The US wants to take action against it and sanctions former members of the Taliban.

Given the oppression of women and girls

The United States announced new sanctions against the Taliban in Afghanistan on Tuesday. “Today I announce the restrictions on visas (…) for current and former members of the Taliban and others responsible for the oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan (…) (…)”, said the secretary of state American Antony Blinken on International Girl’s Day.

Afghanistan has been “for a year now the only country in the world where girls are systematically excluded from school after sixth grade”, he said, adding that there is no improvement in sight.

After taking power in August 2021, the Taliban promised a more moderate approach than their government between 1996 and 2001. In recent months, however, the rights of women and girls in particular have been severely restricted.

At least 43 people were killed in a suicide attack in the women’s section of an education center in Kabul in late September, most of them young women preparing for an exam.
