The EU Commission gives bad testimonies to Turkish democracy

Repression, corruption, trade with Russia: the list of shortcomings for Turkey is long, says the EU Commission. Negotiations for membership are at a standstill.

To die

According to the European Commission, Turkey is still not making progress on its way to the European Union. “The functioning of democratic institutions in Turkey shows serious shortcomings,” says a report released Wednesday. Democratic regression has continued recently. “The accession negotiations are still at a standstill,” said Commissioner in charge Oliver Varhelyi.

The judiciary continues to take systematic action against opposition politicians, the pressure on civil society organizations continues to increase, and there has been no progress in the fight against corruption, the report said.

Furthermore, the EU Commission criticizes the fact that Turkey has not yet joined the sanctions against Russia due to the war against Ukraine. Instead, Ankara expanded trade with Russia. The report also highlights tensions with EU countries, Greece and Cyprus. Turkey must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all EU countries.

At the same time, the European Commission stresses that Turkey is an important partner for the EU in areas such as migration, trade and energy. Turkey also facilitated dialogue between Russia and Ukraine and played a crucial role in the UN-Russia and Ukraine agreements that allow grain exports from Ukraine.

“We do not accept unfounded accusations and unfair criticisms,” the Turkish presidential office said Wednesday. The report reveals an EU policy that lacks a strategic position and vision. It ignores its responsibility towards Turkey as a candidate country and uses double standards. This is “another example of the partial attitude of the EU towards Turkey”.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently made it clear that he wanted to make progress in EU accession negotiations.
