Ramelow: protests in East Germany “very dangerous”

Right-wing populists have recently managed to mobilize thousands. The prime minister of Thuringia therefore warns against a dangerous alliance.

Bodo Ramelow (left) is concerned about protests against the federal government’s energy policy, particularly in East Germany. “A new Pegida is emerging,” he said in the weekly “Die Zeit,” as the newspaper reported earlier Wednesday. The situation is very dangerous.

As Ramelow said, the activities of groups such as the Free Saxons and the Free Thuringians in alliance with the AfD lead to “the formation of a new publicly visible fascist movement”. People’s fears would be exploited.

Thousands of people took part in the protests for weeks. On the Day of German Unity, around 36,000 people took to the streets in Thuringia, including around 10,000 in Gera alone. “Everyone who somehow belongs to the right-wing spectrum has gathered there, reaching down to the deepest right-wing extremist milieu,” Ramelow said. The leader of the Thuringian AfD parliamentary group, Björn Höcke, also took part in the demonstration in Gera.
