Paralympic Lora Fachie is overjoyed to read the first Braille story on CBeebies

Paralympic cyclist Lora Fachie said she was “over the moon” to read the first Braille episode of CBeebie’s Bedtime Stories alongside guide dog Tai.

Fachie, a gold medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, is assigned to read The Secret Code – a story about a young boy whose classmates are fascinated by the way he reads because he uses braille.

It’s the first in the long-running series to be read in Braille, and for the first time the illustrations have been described with audio.

While reading the book on World Sight Day on October 13, Fachie said: “I am over the moon to read a CBeebies bedtime story in Braille for the first time.

“I’ve always loved to read and I hope this will encourage everyone to want to read, whether they’re using their eyes, their ears, their fingers, or a secret code.

“Reading stimulates the imagination and I will read to my little one from birth.”

She also recorded a second episode for the children’s television channel.

The secret code was written by Dana Meachen Rau and illustrated by Bari Weissman, and the Braille transcription was provided by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

CBeebie’s Bedtime Stories is shown daily at 18:50 and is also available on BBC iPlayer.
