Man sentenced after ‘playing donuts in BMW while person was on roof’

Police have released drone footage of a man demonstrating donuts in his car – while a person was on the roof.

Callum Richings, 23, drove his BMW to a car meeting at an industrial estate in Swindon on April 24 this year, Wiltshire Police said.

The force’s drone unit was in the area and took footage of him spinning in large circles while around 150 people looked on.

A spokeswoman said the Richings vehicle drifted about five feet from onlookers.

Sgt Will Ayres, of Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “The drone footage of this incident is really quite shocking.

“Ritchings not only risked someone’s life by performing donuts with a person on the roof of his vehicle, but his driving could so easily have resulted in injury or worse to the crowds that stood and watched nearby.

“Street troopers are working with local police teams to identify crime related to these meetings and I would like to give a special thank you to the drone unit as it was their footage that enabled us to achieve this conviction.

“While we fully recognize that many car enthusiasts wish to legally and peacefully meet with like-minded people at car meetings, we also appreciate the disruption these incidents can cause to local communities and we will continue to take proactive steps to to disrupt this behavior.”

Ritchings, from Field Barn, Kemble, Gloucestershire, was stopped by officers after driving away from the industrial estate.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in Swindon Magistrates’ Court on September 27, was banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to re-test before being allowed to drive legally again, police said.

He will also have to do 100 hours of unpaid work, pay £85 in prosecution costs and a £95 surcharge, the force said.
