Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has warned Tory MPs that getting rid of Liz Truss as Prime Minister would be a “disastrously bad idea”.
Speaking of Radio 4’s Today programmeMr Cleverly said the government needed to do things that “bring certainty to the markets”.
“I think a change in leadership would be a catastrophically bad idea politically and also economically. We will absolutely focus on growing the economy,” he said.
Mr Cleverly had previously not ruled out changing the government’s tax plans when asked about corporate tax.
Asked if the government would reverse its announcement last month that it would keep the corporate tax rate at 19 percent and not raise it as previously planned, he said Sky news Kwasi Kwarteng would soon lay out the full financial plan and that supporting companies to remain competitive was the right thing to do.
“The Chancellor will come to the shipping box,” he said. “I think it’s absolutely right that we made it clear that we want to invest in companies.”
