Camilla’s remarkable journey from royal mistress to queen consort

The Queen Consort will be crowned alongside her husband, King Charles – a symbolic moment that will seal a relationship that has captivated the nation.

Camilla’s journey from romantic engagement to mistress and eventually wife to the king has unfolded for more than five decades and will culminate in her officially becoming the queen of the nation.

There was speculation as to what title she would hold when Charles ascended the throne, but the Queen quashed the rumors in February when she said it was her “sincere wish that when that time comes, Camilla will act as Queen Consort.” will be known”.

Joe Little of Majesty magazine said: “It’s amazing what a difference 20 years makes, it’s gone from not entirely obscure to the second highest in the country, so it’s quite an upward trend in a relatively short period of time.”

In her February statement, the Queen also spoke about the role of consort, saying that in her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, she was “blessed” to have a partner “who is willing to take on the role of consort and selflessly making the sacrifices involved”.

Mr Little said: “Charles has made it clear what he does over the past few years, he could not possibly have done without her. So I think people have no doubt that she is as invaluable to him as Philip is to the Queen.”

Camilla’s public image has changed after being cast as the third person in the marriage of the former Prince and Princess of Wales to become a campaign member of the monarchy ready to serve the nation.

Among them was the down-to-earth Sussex girl who grew up loving horses and accidentally fell in love with Charles.

In the 17 years she has been married to the King, the Queen Consort has grown into this role and is now a confident royal hostess when hosting a reception at Clarence House, or a confident Queen’s representative when traveling abroad is invited.

Camilla is a patron or supporter of a number of literacy charities, advocates for victims of domestic violence and campaigns for several animal welfare organizations.

But their most significant role will likely be to support the king and be the comforting presence that enables him to fulfill his role as head of state.

Mr Little said of the Queen Consort: “I would certainly say she was willing to work for ‘the Firm’ for 17 years and make her name, albeit slowly but very clearly, she has her worth as hers deceased mother-in-law proved. law saw.

“But she’s clearly an extremely capable woman, yet she’ll be taking on this role at a time when her peers are 10 or 15 years into retirement.”

Charles first met fun, confident Camilla on the polo field at Windsor Great Park in 1970, just out of Cambridge University, a year before joining the Royal Navy.

According to legend, she reminded him of a long-standing liaison between her great-grandmother, Alice Keppel, and King Edward VII.

“My great-grandmother was your great-great-grandfather’s lover — how about that?” she reportedly asked.

Despite the closeness between them, no marriage proposal came, and in 1971 Charles joined the Navy. The relationship cooled as he devoted himself to service and long periods at sea.

Camilla went on to marry cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973 and Charles married the former Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 – but sometime in the 1980s their romance was thought to have resumed.

In 1994, Charles had admitted to adultery in a television interview with broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, but only after his marriage had “cracked irretrievably.”

The following year, Diana said on the BBC documentary Panoroma, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” a nod to Camilla.

After Charles and Camilla both divorced – and Diana died in 1997 – Camilla’s subsequent emergence as Charles’ longtime partner was part of a carefully planned public relations campaign directed by his doctor, Mark Bolland.

Their first public appearance together was in 1999 in front of the Ritz Hotel in London, dubbed Operation Ritz, where the crowd of waiting photographers had been warned.
