Brexit US free trade deal ‘blunting’ an ’embarrassment’ for Liz Truss, says Labor

Failure to conclude an imminent free trade agreement between the UK and the US is an “embarrassment” for Liz Truss, Labor said.

The prime minister admitted that negotiations on a post-Brexit free trade agreement with the US will not resume in the coming years, as she flew to New York ahead of a meeting with Joe Biden.

The Tory leader will attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York on her first overseas trip as prime minister.

Labor Secretary of State David Lammy said: “After Liz Truss was dismissed from office in her first weeks in office by the Biden administration, she urgently needs to wake up to the damage her reckless approach to foreign policy is doing to the national interest of the UK.

A spokesman for the Liberal Democrats added that Ms Truss’ “cack-handed diplomacy” was responsible for the failure to strike a deal.

Ms Truss will also hold talks with Emmanuel Macron, the first since she questioned whether he was a “friend or foe” to the UK.
