Where are Dustin Martin, Bailey Smith and Buddy Franklin? The AFL’s big names are skipping the 2022 Brownlow

It was the night of nights for the AFL at Sunday night’s Brownlow medal count.

But some of the sport’s biggest names were absent from the red carpet at Melbourne’s Crown Casino.

Soccer legends Dustin Martin, Bailey Smith and Lance “Buddy” Franklin all skipped the ceremony and were not spotted at the after parties either.

Bailey Smith, 21, walked the red carpet at the Brownlow last year but is likely to be spending time out of the spotlight following a high-profile suspension.

As of Sunday, his only posts on social media appeared to be sponsored content from his collaboration with clothing chain Cotton On.

He was handed a two-match ban for “improper conduct” after photos and videos containing a white powdered substance surfaced in June.

‘I’m doing well. It was a bit of a challenging time there, but I think everyone goes through things like that,” he said.

“It was good to strip down to play footy again when I could go out and be with my teammates again. It’s been a journey, but it’s been super fulfilling.’

In June, pictures circulated of Bailey holding a bag of white powder up to the camera.

In a separate video, he was also filmed sniffing an unknown substance.

According to the Herald Sun, his girlfriend Gemma Dawkins had supported her boyfriend amid the scandal.

When asked about Dawkins, the star remained tight-lipped.

“I’m not going to talk about that,” he told a reporter. ‘I love her. She’s the best, but we’re letting her out of there.”

Bailey admitted to “making mistakes” when the story broke in the middle of this year.

“We are extremely disappointed to have observed social media content showing Bailey Smith using an illegal substance,” Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains said in a statement at the time.

Dustin Martin, 31, meanwhile, is embroiled in a controversy of his own.

A wild video surfaced earlier this month showing the AFL superstar wiggling the breast of a topless woman while she sits on another man’s lap.

The footage was leaked on social media and it has since been confirmed that the vision dates back to 2015.

The AFL is said to be “seeking more information” and the league’s CEO Gillon McLachlan has described the vision as “looking bad” for the competition.

In the footage, Martin can be seen carrying drinks to a table while a semi-naked woman sits on the lap of another man, who has not been identified.

Martin then slips his hand under the woman’s arm from behind and grabs her breast before walking away.

The three-time Premiership winner with Richmond was 23 or 24 at the time and club officials have conceded it “isn’t looking good”.

An AFL source stated that the gathering was not organized by the club at the time, the venue was not a strip club and the club was unaware of the footage’s existence until it was released, The Age reported.

It is believed the AFL should speak to Martin about the matter afterwards the elimination final against the Brisbane Lions.
