“The Patient” is not based on a true story, but very personal things from the real life of the creators are woven into it

Steve Carrell’s mesmerizing new role in The patient It’s not based on a true story, but Hulu series creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg took several critical things from their personal lives for the show. in the The patient, Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson) kidnaps his therapist Alan Strauss (Carell) for home therapy. Sam wants help to stop his murderous urges, but despite Alan’s attempts, the killings continue. Here is the inspiration for The patient came out.

The patient on Hulu is not based on a true story or book. Instead, the inspiration behind the new psychological thriller came from the personal lives and interests of the creators. Producers and showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg grew up in Jewish families. So they decided to build Alan’s character around Judaism. Both writers also spent a lot of time in therapy, so they decided to make a series around it.

TIED TOGETHER: The Patient: Where Was The Hulu Series Filmed?

Although the central plot of The patient is about Alan Strauss’ attempt to treat a serial killer, there are several underlying storylines. Alan speaks frequently about the death of his wife and his son’s conversion to Orthodox Judaism. So why did the writers make Carell’s character Jewish? In a recent interview, showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg spoke about Alan’s religion.

“When we first came up with the idea, the character wasn’t originally Jewish,” Weisberg told Variety. “And then, like you always do, you start looking for ways to add specificity and depth. And we came up with this idea pretty quickly. But it allowed us to tap into things in our own lives.”

It came alive as the writers brought their shared beliefs to the series.

“The Jewish issues are very personal and important to each of us,” Fields explained in the same interview. “My father was a rabbi, so I grew up in this world. Joe too grew up in a Jewish family. In this way we were able to tap something very personal for ourselves. And ultimately, I think a big part of our belief as storytellers is that we’re trying to amplify our shared humanity.”

Joe Weisberg grew up in a liberal Jewish home in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Bernard Weisberg, was a civil rights attorney while his mother, Lois, was a social activist. However, in an interview with The New York Times, Joe described himself as a stubborn young adult. After graduating from Yale University, he shocked family and friends by joining the CIA.

“Growing up in a liberal family and joining the CIA was the most transgressive thing you could do,” Joe’s brother Jacob Weisberg told the outlet.

The decision is similar to Alan’s son’s decision to become an Orthodox Jew The patient. Ezra (Andrew Leeds) came from a liberal Jewish family but converted to strict Conservative Judaism. Another similarity between Weisberg’s real life and Ezra’s character is that both had a parent who became ill and died after their significant life transition. In 1993, Weisberg took a leave of absence from the CIA to move to Chicago to care for his ailing father. However, Ezra’s decisions did not follow this path. Instead, he contradicted Alan about his mother’s care and desires.

Although Fields and Weisberg never kidnapped their therapists, both men spent significant time in therapy throughout their lives. They thought the topic might be interesting for a TV series.

“We realized there was a problem, and that was that the therapy didn’t have an inherent drive,” Weisberg told Newsweek. “It’s just people talking and it’s very important work, but it’s not the kind that works for a TV show.”

However, therapy itself is a slow process, so they needed something to keep the show moving. This is how the idea of murder and kidnapping was born.

“So we kind of put it aside and started thinking, ‘what if we did some of the more traditional ways of being a serial killer and what if we had a serial killer who wanted to get better?'” he continued. “That was an interesting take, but we also weren’t sure if that would work, and then we were like, ‘Wait a minute, what if this serial killer goes into therapy?’ then we were like, ‘Wait! Wait a minute, what if he kidnaps the therapist?’ and then we had a show and at that point we just knew we could write this in an interesting and fun way and from that point on we were really excited about it.”

And so it is The patient was born, not from a true story, but built on experience and intrigue.

Eight episodes of The patient are available to stream on Hulu. The last two episodes will be released on the streamer on October 18th and 25th.
