“The Golden Girls”: Which Christmas episode is the best?

The classic TV series The golden girls caused a lot of laughs during the Christmas season. Like many sitcoms, the show had holiday episodes where the women in Miami partied. While there weren’t many Christmas episodes, fans still got a kick out of seeing their favorite girls’ holiday traditions.

The golden girls aired two Christmas episodes during its seven-year run on NBC. The first Christmas episode “Twas the Nightmare Before Christmas” aired in the second season. In the plot, the ladies plan to go to their hometowns for the holidays. However, her plans are foiled when Santa Claus holds her at gunpoint in Rose Nylund’s (Betty White) grief counseling center.

In Season 5, the episode “Have Yourself a Very Little Christmas”, the girls volunteer to work at a soup kitchen. Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) is shocked when a homeless Santa turns out to be her ex-husband Stan Zbornak (Herb Edelman). During dinner, Stan informs Dorothy that his wife has kicked him out and he has lost his business.

Although there were only two Christmas episodes The golden girls, both were entertaining. The episodes caused plenty of laughter as the ladies prepared for the holidays. Then, at the end, they learn an important lesson about the true meaning of Christmas.

But which episode has the highest ranking? According to IMDB.com, Twas the Nightmare Before Christmas is what fans prefer. The episode has a 7.8 rating, while “Have Yourself a Very Little Christmas” has a 7.5 rating.

It’s understandable why “Twas the Nightmare Before Christmas” is the highest rated Christmas episode of The golden girls. The episode had many funny moments. The best is Blanche Devereaux’s (Rue McClanahan) Men of Blanche’s boudoir calendar for her friends. The girls were so overwhelmed by the gift that Dorothy cried out “Wow” when she saw Mr. September.

Calendar aside, Blanche’s flirtatious side was in full swing by the beginning of the episode. The girls come home early and see that Blanche is having fun with Santa. She later admits that men in Santa Claus outfits turn her on.

The ladies would not spend the holidays together because they were returning to their hometowns. However, fate had other plans. When Dorothy and Blanche pick up Rose from work, an armed Santa holds the hostage. Luckily, Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) comes to the rescue by revealing that Santa Claus has a fake gun.

When the women finally arrive at the airport, they are disappointed to find that their flights have been cancelled. The girls go to a nearby diner for cheesecake, grieving not to be with their families. But the diner owner (Teddy Wilson) reminds them that the four of them are family.

While Albert goes home to his family, the ladies offer to take care of dinner. Snowfall begins in Miami and the episode ends with the girls smiling as they spend Christmas as a family.
