Princess Charlotte broke down in tears after attending Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday alongside her older brother Prince George.
The two eldest children of Prince William and Kate Middleton were added to the service at Westminster Abbey late and were only confirmed by the palace when the order of service was issued the night before.
Charlotte, 7, and George, 9, were originally supposed to walk behind their parents and ahead of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but when their father arrived from a motorcade the plan changed. The future King George, who is second in line to the throne, and his sister instead stepped between the new Prince and the Princess of Wales, in a row of four behind the Queen’s children.
Outside the Abbey, Charlotte later appeared to be in tears, her hand over her eyes as Kate comforted her.
Her youngest brother, Prince Louis, 4, stayed home for the summer occasion. William and Kate decided he was too young to handle the intense emotion of the service, in which a lone piper captured the sadness of the historic moment.
