Pop star Kris Wu convicted of rape

Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu is on trial

sentenced to 13 years in prison for rape. A Beijing court found the 32-year-old guilty of getting three women drunk and forcing them to have sex in his apartment in November and December 2020, when they “were no longer able to fight back”. After serving his sentence, Wu will be deported to Canada.

The court sentenced the superstar to eleven and a half years in prison on the rape charge. “For the crime of assembling people for adultery” a further sentence of one year and ten months was added. After 13 years in prison, he should be deported.

In addition, Wu was fined the equivalent of 80 million euros for tax evasion, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing Beijing’s tax authorities. They accused the 32-year-old of hiding his actual income with the help of branches at home and abroad, among other things.

Wu rose to fame as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band EXO. In 2014 he started a successful solo career as a singer, actor and model. In China he is a superstar.

In 2021, a 19-year-old student made allegations against the pop star. She raped her when she was 17, he explained to her. Other alleged victims later spoke out on the Internet and accused Wu’s employees of inviting them to, among other things, alcoholic karaoke parties.

The Kris Wu case caused a scandal. Brands such as Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, L’Oréal and Porsche suspended their collaborations with him and the #MeToo movement in China briefly revived. But, as in early 2018, it was quickly stopped by censors.

Recently, a series of scandals has brought down some of China’s biggest entertainers. In addition to Kris Wu, actress Zheng Shuang has been fined the equivalent of over 39 million euros for tax evasion, movie star Zhao Wei’s website has been taken down for unknown reasons, and reality talent shows, particularly popular with young people were banned.
