OG ‘Bachelor’, Bob Guiney, Resolves Mike Fleiss’ Legendary Quote About Him

Longtime fans of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” can not help but remember Bob Guiney. He was an admirer on the very first season of “The Bachelorette” with Trista Rehn. After Oprah Winfrey insisted that he be the next bachelor, fans got behind the idea and it actually happened.

On an August 25 podcast (podcast #301) featuring Bachelor Nation icon Reality Steve, Guiney spoke about his experience with the show and what life has been like since. Towards the end of the podcast, Reality Steve brought up the topic that many fans were probably waiting for.

“So I have to set something straight,” Realty Steve stated. “This has been an urban myth – and an urban legend – over the past 10 [or] 12 years. If I told you ‘The Mike Fleiss quote about Bob Guiney’, you’d know exactly what I’m talking about, wouldn’t you?” Guiney knew immediately which quote Reality Steve was referring to. (Mike Fleiss is the creator of the Bachelor).

Reality Steve went on to explain, “like in 2010 they did a kind of ‘behind the scenes’ special on ‘The Bachelor’…just throws out, ‘Bob Guiney had sex with five and a half women on the show.’” The show Reality Steve refers to is the 20/20 special “Inside the Bachelor: Stories Behind the Rose” which aired in March, 2010.

Reality Steve begged Guiney to explain why Fleiss made such a strange statement. Although Guiney couldn’t say for sure what was on Fleiss’ mind, he said he did ask him at the time, ‘What the hell was that? Because I remember first thinking to myself, what the heck is a half? And second, I wasn’t even alone with five, or even five and a half men.”

As seen on YouTube, Fleiss didn’t just “throw” the statement, as Reality Steve suggested. It was actually an answer to a follow-up interview question about how much sex actually takes place during filming. Fleiss first admitted, “There’s sex. There’s not a lot of it. I think the average is that the guy will have sex with about three women over the course of the show.”

The interviewer then asked, “Who do you think had the highest batting average?” to which Fleiss confidently replied, “That’s my husband, Bob Guiney. I think he was five and a half.”

During the Reality Steve podcast, Guiney explained that his standard response to questions about what the quote meant was “a gentleman doesn’t discuss that part of the show,” leaving fans wondering if there’s any truth to the claim. But in this podcast, Guiney confirmed that there was no truth in it. “I can tell you the number isn’t right,” he said.

Guiney then said the most horrific part of that whole experience was, “I was actually going through a divorce when that aired and my grandmother was watching that special too. And my grandma called me and said, ‘Bobby, what…’ and I said, ‘oh my god, grandma, I have no idea what he’s talking about. I think he’s kidding. It just caught me at a weird time in my life dealing with it.” Reality Steve laughed along with Guiney, reiterating that “longtime fans of the show will always remember the Fleiss quote.”
