Meghan wears the Queen’s favorite nail polish shade for the funeral in a touching way

Meghan Markle paid a moving tribute to her late mother-in-law Queen Elizabeth II on Monday when she attended the monarch’s state funeral wearing a special shade of pink nail polish.

The Duchess of Sussex attended the funeral alongside her husband Prince Harry and his in-laws, including the Princess of Wales (with eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte) and the King Charles III with Camilla, Queen consort.

Meghan was dressed in traditional royal mourning attire: a black dress that covered her shoulders and a large, wide-brimmed black hat. Her fingernails were painted in a pale pink shade that was known to be one of the late queen’s favourites.

The monarch, who died aged 96 on September 8, was known to prefer a shade of polish known as “Ballet Slipper” from cosmetics company Essie, which she wore regularly from the 1980s.

Although widely reported, Essie herself appeared to confirm the rumors in 2017 when a company spokesperson said Today: “This always elegant lacquer was born in 1982 and received the royal blessing of the Queen of England, only seven years after its birth, when the hairdresser of Elizabeth II sent [the brand’s founder] Essie Weingarten a letter requesting that the shade be delivered directly to Buckingham Palace in London.”

The monarch was known to dislike garish nail colors and kept her nails natural or simply colored with the near-nude shade of “ballet slipper” pink.

It appears Meghan shares the late Queen’s tastes, as she wore the same shade the monarch loved on her wedding day in 2018. With her simple, lined Givenchy silk boat neck gown and diamond tiara on loan from the queen, the bride opted for muted makeup, which included delicate pale pink nails.

The choice of polish wasn’t the only touching tribute Meghan paid to the Queen when she appeared at the state funeral on Monday.

The Duchess also wore a pair of diamond and pearl earrings given to her by the Queen on the morning of their first solo engagement together. The memory of the day she received them impressed the Duchess so much that she told Oprah Winfrey about it during her landmark 2021 interview with the TV star.

“[The queen] has always been wonderful to me,” Meghan said during the interview, in which she also spoke about not being supported by the Royal Family while working in the family.

“We had one of our first joint engagements together. She asked me to join her, and…we had breakfast together that morning, and she gave me a nice present and I I absolutely loved being in his company.”

Asked by Winfrey what the gift was, Meghan replied: “She gave me beautiful pearl earrings and a necklace to match. And we were in the car between the engagement, and she has a blanket that lays on her lap for warmth. And it was cold, and she was like, ‘Meghan, come on’ and put it on my lap too.”

She added: “It made me think of my grandmother, where she was always warm and inviting and really welcoming.”

In addition to the polish and pearls, Meghan’s outfit itself had a connection to the Queen.

The black cape midi dress echoed a navy version worn at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2018 during a concert celebrating the Queen’s 92nd birthday.

Following the funeral at Westminster Abbey, Meghan and Harry accompanied the royals to Windsor Castle for a more intimate ceremony, after which the Queen will be laid to rest at St. George’s Chapel.
