Meghan calls ‘hysterical’ insult—decades after she was hurled at Diana

Meghan Markle and the late Princess Diana had both previously been subjected to a trope that the Duchess of Sussex aimed for in her Spotify podcast.

The last episode of Archetypeswhich dropped on Tuesday, was titled ‘The Decoding of Crazy’ and saw Meghan suggest she had been smeared based on comments about her mental health.

Among the words she uttered was “hysterical,” a tag pinned to herself and Diana about three decades apart.

Meghan called out a series of words she says were used to undermine women during her latest episode of Archetypes.

She said: “Raise your hand if you’ve ever been called ‘crazy’ or ‘hysterical’, or what about ‘crazy’, ‘crazy’, ‘crazy’, ‘completely irrational’? period.

“Now if we were all in the same room and could see each other, I think it would be pretty easy to see how many of us have our hands up? By the way, me too.”

And she took the time to focus specifically on the word hysterical, citing the fact that the etymological root is the Greek word for uterus and that it was a medical diagnosis until 1980.

Meghan said: “To call someone crazy or hysterical completely dismisses their experience.

“It minimizes how they feel and, you know, it doesn’t stop there. It continues to the point that anyone who’s tagged it enough times can be gassed into thinking they’re actually sick. Or sometimes worse, to the point where real issues of all kinds are ignored.

In a now famous interview from 1995, Princess Diana spoke to the BBC about the impact her depression had on her marriage.

She said: “Well, maybe I was the first person in this family to have depression or openly cry. And obviously that was intimidating, because if you’ve never seen it before , how do you support it?”

She added: “Well, it’s given everyone a wonderful new label – ‘Diana is unstable’ and ‘Diana is mentally unbalanced’. And unfortunately that seems to have stopped over the years.”

Andrew Morton described in his 1992 biography Diana: her true story how the Princess was portrayed as ‘irrational, unreasonable and hysterical’ – while newspapers quote King Charles III’s friends saying she was a ‘megalomaniac who wants to be at the top of the pile. She wants to be seen as the most great woman of the world. Her behavior puts an end to the future of her marriage, the country and the monarchy itself.”

More recently, biographer Tom Bower wrote in his 2018 book rebel prince that Queen Camilla had described Diana as a “mad cow”.

He wrote: “In the guest toilet of Camilla’s house, Ray Mill, were unflattering caricatures of Diana.

“‘That mad cow,’ Camilla said, echoing the opinion of her and Charles’ friends.”

In another section, he suggested that Charles, Camilla and Deputy Private Secretary Mark Bolland had met to discuss the description of Diana as hysterical.

Bower wrote: “Regardless of resentment towards them, Charles, Camilla and Bolland met at Highgrove to build another campaign. The first hurdle was to debunk Diana by radically changing her image and portraying her as a hysterically manipulative.”

Meghan herself has been described as hysterical before, including in another of Bower’s biographies.

In revengethe author said Meghan and Buckingham Palace reacted negatively to a vanity lounge Cover story and interview with her, which was published in September 2017 and was titled: “She’s just mad about Harry.”
