Kelly Rowland has come under fire for her defense of Chris Brown at the American Music Awards on Sunday.
The performer, known for his time with Destiny’s Child, presented the award for Favorite Male R&B Artist and accepted it on behalf of Brown, who has faced multiple allegations of violence against women.
After announcing the beleaguered R&B singer’s name, the crowd erupted in mockery.
“Excuse me,” Rowland said into the microphone. “Relax.”
She then thanked Brown for “making great R&B music”.
“Thank you for being an amazing performer,” she continued. “I’ll take this award [and] bring it to you. I like you. Congratulations and congratulations to all the nominees in this category.”
Many social media users slammed Rowland after his defense of Brown.
“Kelendria Rowland. I was ROOTED FOR YOU!!!! We were ALL rooted for you, how DARE YOU”, Twitter User @MediumSizeMeech wrote Sunday evening.
“Chris Brown just won a #AMA *and* Kelly Rowland shut down the audience so she could praise him and preach how much she loves him? wow! Maybe it’s time to turn that off”, @yosoymichael wrote in a tweet.
