Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as John Constantine in the sequel to the 2005 DC Comics-based film

Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 superhero film Constantine.

News of the 58-year-old actor was confirmed by Deadline on Friday, and it was reported that Francis Lawrence, who made his directorial debut in the original film, would return to direct the sequel.

Akiva Goldsman will also write the screenplay for the upcoming feature film and co-produce with JJ Abrams.

Plot details and casting information for Constantine’s sequel are currently being withheld from the public.

The original film focused on the DC Comics character of the same name, created by John Totleben, Stephen R. Bissette, Rick Veitch and Alan Moore.

The film followed the Exorcist as he became involved in a conflict between characters from Heaven and Hell.

In addition to Reeves, the film starred the likes of Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton and Shia LaBeouf.

Constantine received mixed reviews upon its release, although it was well received by audiences and grossed just over $230 million according to Box Office Mojo.

A live-action series centered on the character, played by Matt Ryan, premiered in 2014 and ran for a single season.

The actor portrayed the detective in several DC Comics-based programs over the next few years.

A female version of the character, played by Jenna Coleman, appeared in the recently released Netflix series The Sandman.

According to Variety, a television series about Constantine was previously in development on HBO Max.

However, multiple sources spoke to the media and confirmed that the project had been shelved in favor of the film.

Four scripts for the now shelved programme, which would have taken place in London, had been written prior to the announcement.

Reeves spoke to Variety back in 2019 and said he would like to reprise his role as John Constantine in the future.

At the time, he declared, “I just loved this world… and I love this character.”
