Comedian Kathy Griffin referenced the infamous controversy between Harry Styles and Chris Pine on Tuesday night as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live!jokingly, “I’ve been spat on my entire career.”
Griffin told viewers she was a last-minute guest on Kimmel’s show after Pine canceled the appearance.
As she sat next to Kimmel, Griffin said, “Let’s not be mean to the public. I’m here, as usual, because someone more famous had a fight.”
“But understand, it was Chris Pine, who Harry Styles spat on!” she says. “So he doesn’t want to be here and have this one asking him questions,” Griffin added, referring to Kimmel.
“The reason you called me is because you know I’ve been spat on my whole career,” she joked, adding that she was also spat on by the performer of ” As It Was” once. “I asked him,” she said.
The internet exploded a few weeks ago during the Venice International Film Festival when fans and onlookers thought they saw the former One Direction star spit on his co-star Pine at the premiere of don’t worry darling.
Styles joked about the incident during a concert in Madison Square Garden after the festival, saying: “I had just jumped very quickly to Venice to spit on Chris Pine”, he laughed, “but don’t you Don’t worry, we’re back.”
Pine also denied the incident, with his rep writing in a statement, “This is a ridiculous story – a complete fabrication and the result of a bizarre online illusion that is clearly misleading and allows for foolish speculation.”
“Just to be clear, Harry Styles didn’t spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion to the contrary is a blatant attempt to create drama that just doesn’t exist,” he added.
Nonetheless, the incident has been dubbed a “Spitgate” online, and it only added to the ongoing drama over the weekend between the don’t worry darling cast.
Pine also skipped the don’t worry darling premiered in New York last weekend, sources say.
After joking about Spitgate, Griffin went on to tell Kimmel that she was working on finding her voice after her battle with cancer.
“So the last time I came here, very quickly, I got lung cancer, they took out half of my left lung, and my voice was damaged,” Griffin said. “I’m fine, it doesn’t hurt, and the important thing is that my boobs still look fabulous.”
The comedian also said Monica Lewinsky once told him she voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, despite Lewinsky’s history with Bill Clinton.
