Jonathan Goodwin insists the near-fatal stunt during rehearsals for American’s Got Talent: Extreme that left him paralyzed wasn’t his fault.
The 42-year-old Britain’s Got Talent contestant, who appeared on the series in 2019, claimed he “didn’t do anything wrong” when an Instagram fan asked him to explain the cause of the tragic accident that left him with life-changing injuries.
Escapologist Jonathan refused to go into details but stated he wasn’t to blame after he was crushed between two suspended cars while trying to escape a straight jacket upside down at 30ft for Simon Cowell’s spin-off series .
Jonathan’s fiancée, Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington, 48, announced in May that her partner is now using a wheelchair after sustaining a series of serious injuries during rehearsals for America’s Got Talent: Extreme, which has since been cancelled.
She explained: “He fell 30 feet and lost a kidney, fractured both shoulder blades, shattered both legs.
“Third degree burns, broke his back and severed his spinal cord and nearly died. And then he almost died again on the operating table.
“Unless there’s some sort of stem cell surgery or that thing Elon Musk designs with the little chip, he’ll be like this forever.”
In May, Jonathan shared a post on Instagram saying his dog, who finally got to see him for the first time in six months, had gotten used to the fact that he had “cool new wheels.”
He wrote: “Six months ago I went to a rehearsal for something and had this little hairy monkey waiting patiently for me… he only saw his dad again a few weeks ago and when he finally did his dad had new wheels.”
“Much has changed in the last six months but love is a constant and I am loved dearly. I look forward to my next chapter and to being a role model.”
Amanda, who was married to former Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman, 51, from 2000 to 2016, held back tears as she performed with Jonathan in Lorraine in May.
Jonathan explained that he gave Amanda a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card after his accident, but the star insisted she would always stay by her new fiancé’s side.
Speaking of her relationship with Jonathan, Amanda, who shares children Joe, 16, and Grace, 14, with ex-husband Martin, said: “We’re closer and closer than we’ve ever been.”
Jonathan responded to another fan during an Instagram Q&A on Sunday asking for his advice in “rough times”.
Jonathan shared a throwback photo from his hospital bed and replied: “Stay in the moment.
“Don’t try to project the future or dwell on the past. Take every day, every hour, every minute as it comes. Ask for help if you need it.”
