Joe McElderry looked unrecognizable dressed as Madonna in a throwback photo shared to Instagram on Monday.
The former X Factor star, 31, wore a blonde wig with a copy of her iconic Jean Paul Gaultier tapered corset, which she wore on her Blonde Ambition tour in 1989.
Joe sported a smear of bold pink lipstick and carried a microphone against his cheek. He rested a hand on his hip and cinched his waist with a tight white belt.
As if the snap wasn’t gorgeous enough, he posed with his friend Richard, who was dressed up as actress and singer Liza Minnelli.
Joe wrote: “Found this picture of me and @richardjameshunt dressed up as Madonna and Liza for my birthday party a few years ago. Made me smile.’
Joe has kept a low profile ever since crowned X factor Champion at the age of 18 in 2009.
But 13 years after the career-defining moment, Joe revealed a secret to fans on Monday – that he had left the ITV show three years before his win.
Worlds away from the squeaky clean personality he exuded during the competition, the singer, clad in a chunky leather jacket, on Steph’s packed lunch recalled stepping out during boot camp at age 15.
He said: “So I would have been about 15. I got to boot camp and the second day I was like, “I don’t like the cameras being here.” Just mind blowing.
“I pulled a producer aside and I was like, ‘Excuse me, I’m just going to leave, this isn’t for me.’ I don’t think they’ve ever really had that before. You could say they were a bit like “excuse me, what?”
“I just said, ‘I don’t feel good enough and I don’t feel ready or confident enough and left.’
Joe’s debut single – a cover of Miley Cyrus’ The Climb – went to number one in the UK chart immediately after his X Factor triumph.
The talent show star boasts a discography of five albums, all of which have made the top 20.
His career also took him to the theater in 2015 where he played the lead role of Joseph in the touring production of the musical Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
