US President Joe Biden has announced that the United States will intervene if China invades Taiwan. Asked about it on CBS, he replied, “Yes, if there’s an unprecedented attack.”
However, those comments prompted the White House to qualify its statements and insist that the official position of the United States – which has not announced any military intervention in Taiwan – has not changed.
In Beijing, the government responded that it “regrets and strongly opposes” Joe Biden’s involvement.
The State Department said talks about the comments were being held in Washington.
Taiwan is a self-governing island off the east coast of China and Beijing claims it as part of its territory.
