“Dancing With the Stars” pro dancer Cheryl Burke admitted on an episode of her podcast that she struggles with the “haters” amid her divorce from ex-husband Matthew Lawrence.
Here’s what happened and the message Burke has for her haters:
On the September 26 episode of her podcast “Burke in the Game,” dancer Cheryl Burke opened up about the “negativity” she received while going through divorce proceedings with her ex, actor Matthew Lawrence, whom she married in May 2019. .
“I know a lot of you have responded — not necessarily these listeners, my loyal fans, I love you — but some haters definitely respond and say, ‘Go on, move on,’ said Burke, adding that she’s trying to share her story and live her truth and no one should be “pushed” trying to do that.
“I believe the reason I’ve been given the platform I’ve been given is to share my story and part of sharing is going into your past and talking about it. Anything that weighs heavily on your shoulders or on your mind, and I don’t think anyone should be kept quiet when it comes to their story,” Burke said.
She went on to say that if you don’t like it, “feel free to hit that unfollow button.”
“If you guys don’t like it… you can hit that unfollow button anytime. Because honestly, the negativity just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for me,” the dancer admitted. “I know I shouldn’t listen to it, but I’m only human, right? So, be careful with your words, everyone. I’m just here to share my story. If you don’t like it, then leave.”
She added: “I love you and I say that with love.”
Burke also spoke on the podcast about working on her sobriety, which should be the No. 1 priority in her life, especially when she’s going through a rough patch. Burke has been sober for over four years.
“I’m just trying to keep my head up, you know, one day at a time,” Burke said, adding, “My sobriety comes first and this is what I need to think about and I need to get my head right when I don’t feel like that my sobriety comes first.”
She also said that the “Dancing With the Stars” season 31 premiere was a bit bittersweet because that was the day her divorce was finalized.
“Not only was it the season 31 premiere of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and my 26th season, it was also the end of another chapter, my marriage. So I’m divorced as of Sept. 19, 2022,” Burke said, adding that they’re “still dealing with this canine situation.”
In case you hadn’t heard, Burke has said she and Lawrence may be facing court over custody of their dog, a French bulldog named Ysabella.
But on the October 9 episode of her podcast, Burke thanked her loyal listeners for all their support.
“It was so much fun doing this [podcast], it’s been so therapeutic. It has been a release from all this built up stress, anger, disappointment, happiness, excitement, rollercoaster ride of emotions. So thanks for listening and let me know what you guys want to hear for the new year coming up,” Burke said.
