Dieter Hallervorden no longer wanted to live

Dieter Hallervorden talked about his long-kept secret in Tim Prose’s updated bio. The actor was seriously ill.

Dieter Hallervorden is battling a life-threatening disease. In Tim Prose’s updated bio, “Hallervorden. A Comedian Means,” the actor first talks about his long-kept secret. “For a while I was not well, which is why I was admitted to a clinic, I just had too many suicidal thoughts at the time,” it says in the new edition, which will be published on 13 October. “One day these suicidal thoughts dragged me down longer and deeper than I was used to anyway.”

This became acute a year ago. “His wife Christiane and his best friend were looking for a psychiatric clinic for him at the time. Hallervorden canceled all appointments for the next few weeks, packed his suitcase and went to the hospital for 21 days,” the book says. Hallervorden told Prose of a sleeping pill “which unfortunately he had taken too often for 30 years. From the start, the package insert said you should never take this drug for more than six weeks.” At one point Hallervorden admitted to himself “that this drug no longer calmed him, but made him sick”.

“The warning signs became clearer and clearer. It couldn’t go on like this anymore. I couldn’t live like that anymore,” he said, according to Prose. In the fall of 2021, Hallervorden revealed to his wife Christiane “what gulf had opened in him and how dark it was in his soul”. Then he took the most important step by himself: “For the first time in his life he gave his pills to the clinic in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Obviously his cigarettes too.”

The doctors at the clinic were looking for a replacement. In addition, Hallervorden learned in the clinic, among other things, to meditate and “follow the breath”. The 87-year-old also revealed how he managed to do it: “Following Christiane’s breath, she always falls asleep very quickly when she lies down next to me at night. It works very well. I put myself in her arms, curl up against her and take control of his breathing rhythm – his deep, calm, steady strokes. “

Today Dieter Hallervorden is “full of energy,” says Prose in an interview with spot on news. He has “just opened his third theater, this time in Dessau, his hometown. And he always wants more. He runs his entire life”.

The book says of the time spent in the clinic: “Experts have designed a new lifestyle for their patients.” For outsiders, a change was “rather than not” to be seen later, says the author. Hallervorden kept it a secret for a long time. “It’s not easy for a man who always makes everyone laugh to confess in our book that sometimes he didn’t want to live anymore.”

“He entrusted him to me,” says Prose, “because I have been accompanying him for five years and also performing with him. I am very interested in Hallervorden as a person, with his vulnerable and often aching soul. And so I asked him one night” How is really now. This man is struggling with the depression of an artist who always gives everything. And that’s why he regularly falls into obscurity after his stint in the spotlight. But a year ago it happened. “It came to a head and became life-threatening. Now that he talks about it in the new edition of the book” Ein Komiker macht Ernst “, he wants to encourage people to open up and talk about what is bothering them instead to hide it. “

There will also be joint performances with Hallervorden for the updated biography: “In Berlin and twice in Dessau, all three shows are completely sold out. But on February 18 and 19, 2023 we are still scheduling some in Dessau at its Mitteldeutsches Theater, for that there are still tickets available. “
