“Dancing With the Stars” professional dancer Cheryl Burke opens up about grieving her divorce from her now ex-husband Matthew Lawrence.
Burke has been open with fans about her divorce proceedings and recently spoke to Yahoo! Life about everything that happened and why she chose not to date right now.
Burke and Lawrence met in 2007 and they dated for a year before breaking up. The two then reconnected and reconciled in 2017. In 2018, the two became engaged before getting married in May 2019.
Burke filed for divorce in February 2022 after nearly three years of marriage, according to documents obtained by Us Weekly at the time.
In an interview with Nick Viall on “The Viall Files,” Burke said she feels like she has been grieving since her divorce.
“I’m fine,” she said. “I’m here, and I’m alive and I’m healthy. I take my whole life one by one with my sobriety and also my divorce and life in general.”
She added: “My heart is heavy, and you know, it’s like mourning a death, basically because this is someone I’ve spent every day of my life with for the past five years.”
During the interview, Burke opened up about why she wanted to work on herself during her time alone after her divorce.
“It’s just me and my Frenchie,” Burke told Yahoo! To live. “I’ve been sober for four years now and that includes self-reflection. I’m just a sponge and I’m just learning to love myself and really to be alone instead of lonely. I think it’s really important for me to build that relationship with myself so that I don’t go through that same pattern of men and relationships.”
She said she might use a matchmaker if she decides to date.
“I know statistics show they have a high percentage,” she said. “It’s not about swiping left to see who looks good and what profession they do — it goes deeper than that.”
Burke also appeared to reveal in a TikTok that she kicked her ex-husband out of the house.
“Did you sleep with him or did you just kiss him?” Burke flows out and joins a TikTok trend using a portion of Amazon Prime’s “Modern Love” series. When the voice replies, “I slept with him,” Burke makes a peace sign and says, “Okay, bye.”
Burke also wrote, “Kick him out of my house, hire a divorce attorney, file for divorce,” in addition to hashtags “self-respect, peace beyond and borders.”
According to Us Weekly, Burke and Lawrence were able to settle their divorce so quickly because they honored their prenuptial agreement.
In the prenup, according to Us Weekly, the two agreed that Burke would keep all the money made from “Dancing With the Stars”, scraps and money made from the QVC network.
Lawrence can keep all of his royalties earned, and neither will pay spousal support.
According to The Blast, this is not common in celebrity divorces.
“The parties have entered into a written agreement regarding their property and their marriage or partnership, rights, including support, the original of which is or has been submitted to the court. I request the court to approve the agreement,” the document reads, according to The Blast.
According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly, the two will continue to try to reach a custody agreement for their dog, Ysabella.
“The court expressly reserves the power to decide the ownership of the dog ‘Isabella’ at a later date,” the court documents said. “On 20 May 2019, the Petitioner and the Respondent entered into a Pre-marital Agreement. The (agreement) is valid and enforceable in all respects, and neither party disputes the validity of the Pre-marital Agreement. The terms of the pre-nuptial agreement are included in this judgment.”
