Dakota Johnson wore a pair of wide-leg jeans while walking to the Madame Web film set in New York City on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old star, who plays the film’s titular superhero, teamed her trendy denim pants with an ivory jumper, oversized sunglasses, a necklace of light blue beads and a large black leather bag.
Dakota’s arrival on set coincided with the first glimpse of her costar Tahar Rahim, who is rumored to play the villain in the film.
Rahim, 41, is a French actor of Algerian descent. Before being cast in the superhero blockbuster, Tahar received critical acclaim in the 2009 French film A Prophet and Golden Globe nominations for his work in The Mauritanian and The Serpent.
The snake proved Rahim’s talent to play as a villain He played Charles Sobhraj in an eight-part limited series. A notorious French serial killer, con artist, and thief, Sobhraj preyed on Western tourists traveling through South Asia in the 1970s. His many crimes earned him the nickname “the snake” because, like a snake, he could evade the authorities.
Currently imprisoned in Nepal, Sobhraj inspired the role that would propel Tahar Rahim’s career to new heights and earn him the coveted role in Madame Web. “Tahar Rahim’s pesky performance brings reptilian menace to The Serpent,” praised Rotten Tomatoes.
Details of Rahim’s role in Madame Web have not been released by the studio, but his character has been rumored to be Ezekiel Sims, which these latest pictures seem to confirm. Possessing powers similar to Spider-Man, the clothed and barefoot Sims have been both allies and enemies of the legendary superhero in Marvel Comics.
A wealthy, superhuman businessman, Ezekial Sims also has an unruly mane of gray hair that resembles the style Tahar wears on set. The connection between this rumored villain and Johnson’s Madame Webb is unknown, but the ‘Fifty Shades of Gray’ star won’t be the only Spider-Woman in the film.
Actresses Sydney Sweeney, 25, Celeste O’Connor, 23, Isabela Merced, 21, and Zosia Mamet, 34, are all set to play multiple versions of the superhero, according to online sources. Details on how all of these web-slinger incarnations will interact throughout the film are scant, but that hasn’t stopped many fans from developing various theories.
Due for release on February 16, 2024, Madame Web has been in development since 2019 and has been described by Deadline as “Sony’s version of Doctor Strange” due to Madame Web’s psychic sense powers resembling those of Benedict Cumberbatch’s mystical doctor.
Many A-listers were reportedly considered for the leadership, with Johnson becoming the front-runner after a months-long search. The actress has had a hugely successful run in recent years, recently garnering solid reviews for her performance in Cha Cha Real Smooth and an acclaimed role in 2021’s The Lost Daughter.
It remains unclear how close the film will stay to its source material. Madame Web is depicted in the comics as an elderly woman hooked up to a life support system in the form of a spider web. After casting Johnson for the title role, insiders told Deadline that the film will most likely take a whole new direction.
